Sometimes Painting DO Write Home!
Back in July of 2010 I wrote a piece for Huffington Post Arts titled "Old Friends For Sale". In it I expressed "If only paintings, like kids gone off to college and beyond, could write home once in a while." Yesterday, one did.

It has been a while since I acquired "Queen of Hearts" from you at the Upper West Side flea market, but here she is sitting in California. She has traveled to Michigan and back and was in storage for a bit but now adds color and warmth to my home. Thought you would like to see her again.

Prince Inspiration Week Pt.1
Music is as much a part of my creative process as are paint and canvas. Walk into my studio during work hours and you will be greeted by a variety of rhythms, vocals and musical styles. R&B, Pop, Electronica, Salsa, Jazz...each inspires me in its own unique manner.
Unless you're new to this blog, you probably know by now that for better or worse...brilliant or just downright out-there and kooky, I am a huge Prince fan.
This week I'll post a few paintings (some new, some not so new) that were inspired by the music of the Great Purple One.

Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife, is an amazing ballad from Prince's 1996 triple album Emancipation. The song is one of several in the album which celebrates his then-wife, the beautiful Mayte Garcia, and their union.

Inspiration Outing Pt2: Kathy Beynette
During my visit to Torpedo Factory, I wandered into Studio 7. Ok, "wander" is probably not the most accurate term. I've been to Studio 7 before. I'm drawn to it. The bold color and tongue-in-cheek whimsy that lives there is enough to make it a must every time I visit the factory.
Studio 7 is shared by Kathy Beynette, Tory Cowles and Sheep Jones. Each artist's distinct style works perfectly with those of the other two, creating an atmosphere in the space that is, simultaneously, energetic and harmonious.
As I browsed, I was greeted by Kathy Beynette, who like her work, immediately comes across as charming and confident. After a brief introduction she said, "I was just about to hang a new painting. Let me try it out on you first."
I happily agreed.
She looked over me, awaiting my reaction, as I took in the image and text (a song she wrote and even sang for me).
"Wow, " I said. "That's awesome. Strong."
"I'm gonna get in trouble, aren't I?" she asked, and we both laughed.
"Trouble is not always a bad thing." I answered.
The title of the piece is Mother's Day.
The focal image in the painting depicts a gun-wielding woman and a priest who seems to have run out of luck.
The opening verse reads:
When Tom came home
(he is my son)
and said what father McGee had done
I went out and bought a gun, gun, gun
Kathy is currently researching the proper organization with which to share the proceeds of this painting when it sells. She says it will be either a group that supports victims of child abuse or a group that works to expose the abuse of children by the church and subsequent coverups.

Greetings from England!
I love it when clients send me photos of their Gascots.
I always refer to my paintings as living beings (him, her, he, she) and always talk to clients in terms of the pieces going to live with them. It may all sound a bit strange, but most people don't seem to mind.
It is because my paintings are like children I'm sending off into the world. A few collectors even refer to their purchases as "adopting" a Gascot. LOL
Here is a shot of a recent painting "Zen" with his new family.
Val & Selden with "Zen"
Val had her eye on a Buddha print I have on Imagekind. When her sweetheart of a husband got wind of this he quickly contacted me and we schemed up a story about how I was going to be carrying the prints myself in a few weeks and would let her know when I had them to sell. Emails were flying back and forth simultaneously. I'm so glad I didn't screw up the surprise by sending the wrong information or question to the wrong person. Instead, of course I painted an original piece for them. I was thrilled to see her reaction (he even taped it for me). It meant so much as an artist (and friend).
Enjoy "Zen" for many many years, guys!
