PRESS RELEASE:

The Business of Latino Pride

El Negocio del Orgullo Latino

Springfield, VA, April 14th, 2010--John Gascot wears his Latino pride on his paint-stained sleeve.

"As the fastest-growing segment of our population, Latinos should not still be looked upon as cheap labor. We need to not only preserve our culture, but look out for the best interests of one another." For years, Gascot's passion has been a vital component of his colorful canvases. Now, it's at the heart of Latinpopshop.com- an online retail store that focuses on Latin culture, supporting Latino artists and artisans by promoting them in a fair manner.

The Latin Pop Shop website went live in January of this year with only the artwork of its founder featured for sale. Today, just three months later and without major advertisements, it already represents twelve artists from varied Latino backgrounds. Mr. Gascot envisions representing 30-50 artists (or more) on the Latin Pop Shop website once it becomes further established.

"There are so many faces to our art," he says. "Currently we mainly feature paintings, prints, jewelry and photographs. But we plan to include apparel, home decor, books and more! We even hope to be surprised with submissions of items we had never even thought of." In order to appeal and cater to as wide an audience as possible, the items listed on Latin Pop Shop range from whimsical jewelry and prints prices at under $20 to high-end collectable works of art by well-established artists and everything in between.

Gascot is building on a limited budget, relying more on faith and drive. He's focusing on e-commerce for the time being, but constantly keeps one eye on the future.

"Store fronts! I want store fronts!" he laughs. "I've always envisioned Latin Pop Shop as a physical location- bursting with color and filled with music, shows and live events. Eventually, I'd love to arrange mentorships for young Latino talent. Any investors out there?"

Artist-created www.latinpopshop.com is a brand new online retail gallery specializing in Latino, Latino-American and Latin-themed arts and unique hand made gifts. Latin Pop Shop Inc.'s mission is to support the growth and preservation of Latin culture by promoting creative Latino individuals, fairly, in an effort to help them make a living by doing what they love and are individually talented at. The online store, which launches this spring, is the first step of a venture which artist and founder John Gascot believes will be a multi-faceted success.

Latin Pop Shop Blog

I debated whether I should start up another blog (this new one makes 3), but decided that Latin Pop Shop should have it's own. While initially I intended to discuss the journey of building and growing the business on here (and still will, certain aspects), I would prefer to keep this blog dedicated to my own art and experiences.

In Latin Pop Shop Blog I will not only discuss the business but feature the artists it represents as well as upcoming promotions and maybe even style and trends as they pertain to our inventory.

Should be fun, be sure to bookmark us!

Artistic Goals for 2010

Latin Pop Shop will take at least 50% of my time this year. I am already sure of it. Yesterday I had every intention of getting into the studio to finish a commission and start another and before I knew it the day had been filled by conversations to insurance agents and merchant account reps and answering artist submissions. It am not complaining, it was wonderful. I just need come up with a strict studio schedule to assure I get in there.

It is important that I not let my own art become secondary to Latin Pop Shop. I am one of the artists it represents after all. In an effort to do this (and because I plain wanted to) I've set a few artistic goals for myself this year.

Linocuts:
I'm taking the leap! I have wanted to for quite some time now as I think my work will translate well into this medium. I received my first batch of materials over the weekend and I can't wait to start working with them.

Self Portraits:
At least one. I've been asked several times over the past year about them. I was even forwarded a Call for Artists for a self portrait exhibition just the other day. It's time.

Solo Cyber-Exhibit:
I've discussed this with a handful of people over the last two or so years. Most folk know I am a die hard Prince fan. DIE HARD. His music can be heard in my studio almost daily. I couldn't even tell you how many paintings I've created to his music. I belong to a few online Prince fan communities (Doesn't that just sound so teeny-boppery awful? LOL. It's not actually, I've met incredible lifetime friends. Thanks Mr. Prince!). This year I will put together a show comprised of 10 pieces (I like this number, perfectly achievable and I can always build on it if need be). Each piece will be inspired by a Prince song. I will hold a Cyber Opening Night Reception at one, possibly two, of the fan sites. If I get the opportunity I will hold this show at a physical location as well. The show is tentatively called "Songbook".

My first stash of linocut goodies arrives.
Mmm...art candy!

2010: The Year of Latin Pop Shop

2009 was a pretty good year, overall.
We moved from less-than-adequate accommodations into a house we truly love. We were blessed with good health. Our Saint Bernard rescue, Bogart, joined our crazy family. Most importantly, we enjoyed these things together. So, while I'm looking forward to 2010 being a stellar year (we will make it so), I have no real complaints about '09.
Last year I began toying with a concept for an art-related business. I came up with something that still allows me time behind the easel but will also allow me to reach out to other artists as well as the community. Something that speaks of who I am as an artist and a person. Something that honors my heritage. I came up with Latin Pop Shop, named after "Latin Pop", the term I've used to describe my signature style of painting for years.
Latin Pop Shop is a new online retail gallery/boutique representing Latino and Latino-American artists and artisans. It will specialize in art, jewelry and apparel, but will not be limited to these alone. If it’s bold and colorful and depicts or celebrates Latin culture, made or painted by Latin hands, conceived or written by creative Latino individuals…Latin Pop Shop will probably want to share it with the world!

As a full time artist, I know the “struggle-juggle” of creating art, finding representation and of course, selling. As an artist of Latin descent, I yearn to bring our multi-faceted culture to the masses. And as an art lover and former gallery director, this is simply all I know and love! Latin Pop Shop is the combination and embodiment of my passions. It is a concept I am willing to put my hard work behind because I truly believe in its great potential.

Latin Pop Shop is being launched as an Online Gallery and Boutique but we also are considering “physical” representation of our artists in the form of art festivals and trade shows. Perhaps even Latin Pop Shop Tour event! Another goal for the future…Latin Pop Shop storefronts! For now, we will direct the bulk of our efforts and resources to e-commerce and take each step that follows wisely and logically as we grow. We are committed to representing our artists in ways that are sensible and well-planned.

It's been so exciting, starting the year off with a clear goal. Building it piece by piece. I look forward to watching my baby grow into a big success!

I'm dreaming big and I'm committing to my dreams.
2010 will be the year of Latin Pop Shop!

Size-ism in Art?

I was somewhat confused after receiving the following response from submitting images of the Zen Flower paintings below:

The response:

"I like the idea but maybe the women should be a little more attractive. She looks a little like a body builder with the thick neck and huge shoulders!! It may be that you don’t like archetype figures but they do sell better."

OUCH! LOL!

I know this was someone just expressing their thoughts honestly. I'm not upset. I developed my thick skin long ago. I would understand (and quickly shake off) a simple "I'm sorry, I don't think those would work." or "Those don't do anything for me." But the criticism/suggestion is very specific and coming from someone who by now should be somewhat familiar with my work so I am a bit perplexed. I can't recall ever painting delicate female figures. The thick and curvaceous/larger than life/earth-mother-ish imagery is part of my whole "thing". It's even explained in my Artist Statement.

The critique is also coming from someone experienced in Art Marketing so my intent is not to be dismissive or to imply it isn't sound. I've always been aware that art is no different from any other business, but I guess the romantic in me considered its subjects immune to your typical concerns of size and beauty. Oh, foolish me.

I have no immediate plans on changing my style (or my women). I'm not saying I will never feel inspired to paint slim figures, but in my Latin Pop work, slim women will always be outnumbered by larger ones.

What would Leger and Botero paintings be without large women??

Ok, rant over.

It's Official: I Have an Agent!

Cosmopolitan Lounge
Acrylic on canvas/30x40"
SOLD

I hadn't posted about this before because I was waiting for paperwork to come back, but as of Saturday (papers in my hand) I'm officially signed with an Art Licensing Agent.

He was upfront about the effects of the economy on the art market (which I appreciate) but informed me that the Fine Art Print market continues to hold steady. Lucky for me, this is the market in which he feels my work has the most potential.

I now have to "re-visit" a number of paintings I have already sold and have the new versions professionally scanned for hi-res. Of the pieces he chose, only about 5 have not been already sold. Three of them I will have to borrow back from a gallery. I will be a busy boy getting all this together this coming month.

To be continued...

Painting...not the kind I had in mind.

I've gotten absolutely nothing done in the studio this week.

The past two days (and nights) have been spent giving Artworks@7th, the North Beach coop I belong to, a much-needed "facelift".
I joined in September because I fell in love with the location and the immense potential of the gallery. The space, however looked a bit drab and tired and lacked style. Being steps from the beach and boardwalk, I suggested we are better off capitalizing on the "charm" of the gallery, rather than fighting the architecture (a beach house) in an attempt to make it a white-walled museum-like space.
I proposed a "Beach Gallery" style and got the green light on the project.
Here are some of the results so far:
