LP is the Real Fuckin' Deal!
During an art gig this weekend the Art Monkeys were fortunate enough to catch LP's performance at the Sweetlife music festival. We were on our way out of the pavilion when her voice stopped us in our tracks. We made our way to the stage and became instant fans. WOW...just wow.
We were thrilled to get to meet her and her manager briefly. I downloaded her EP the minute I got home. YOU SHOULD TOO!
We will be painting live to her music during one of our upcoming webcasts. Stay tuned!

Ms. Liberty in the House, Yo!
For the postcard/poster of our upcoming Pride exhibit, 4 Equality: A Show of Pride, Mary and I thought it might be a good idea to portray a singular subject in our individual styles...Lady Liberty.
Here is Mary's completed piece, amazing as always.
In true Latin Pop fashion, mine will be bright and whimsical. It should be completed by the end of tomorrow.

Veggie Garden Time!
Spring and early summer are favorite times of the year for me because I get to go start my gardens. Last year I had a massive vegetable garden which took up most of my summer. This year our new home does not allow for such a large garden. Our backyard is very big but not very sunny so I had to set up my veggie garden in the front. I am not typically a fan of how this looks but there are hedges that almost create a garden-within-a-garden look and I think it will look very nice when it's all finished.
Last week we went plant shopping, a yearly birthday weekend tradition. So far I've planted the following:
3 types of tomatoes, green peppers, red peppers, yellow summer squash, green zucchini, cucumbers, kale (which I've already been cooking), basil, purple basil, Thai basil, culantro (a very exciting find, for my Puerto Rican dishes!), cilantro, oregano, sage and rosemary.

Celebration (in progress)
I can't wait to get back to the studio to continue working on this piece for the upcoming Pride show. It was love at first sight when I began this painting. Sometime after lunch yesterday our relationship hit a rough patch.
After working out some issues we find ourselves back in love.
Stay tuned!

Is 50% Good or Bad?
I think it depends on how many projects you have going on at once and, of course, their nature.
If you're an artist, your workday generally allows a lot more room for "failure". The number of upcoming shows and events I have lined up have turned my studio into an art factory. There are a multitude of pieces being created at once. Working at this pace, not everything turns out as you'd hoped. I'd say that earlier this week I was working at a 50% success rate. Yesterday I painted over two almost-completed canvases that just didn't seem good enough to let live another day. I did, however, complete a 24" x 30" piece I feel very good about.

In & OUT of the Studio
Yesterday started out a bit grey and gloomy but by the afternoon the sun was shining and calling me to paint outdoors. I began working on my "1 in 10" piece for our upcoming 4 Equality: A Show of Pride exhibit (more on that soon, stay tuned!).
This piece is based on the common approximation that 1 in 10 people are gay. I thought it might be interesting if I counted from one to ten over and over again, replacing a random number with a positive word or quality each time. For example: 1, 2, 3, 4, amazing, 6, 7, 8, 10...1, 2, inspiring, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10...and so on. I wanted to do more than write the words on the canvas so I decided to cut silhouette stencils of people from various walks of life. 1 out of every 10 will be pink, a color of great LGBT historic significance.

Night Garden
I completed this painting this past Sunday.
Halfway through, this piece came close to being painted over due to "painter's block". I am so glad I set the canvas aside for a few days and allowed myself time to regroup. It is one of my favorite recent paintings!
