Sometimes 1 becomes 2
Yesterday was a short but good studio day. Inspiration came without much effort. As I began to paint one of my "mujeres" (women) on the canvas, I suddenly felt she needed a friend.

Brown Bag Art
Visit the small, but mighty, Studio 4 of Workhouse Arts Center
and you will find gallery walls overtaken by over 1,300 brown paper
lunch bags. The bags can only mean one thing. The 2nd Annual Have a
Heart Project--an artistic twist on the common (and vital) food
drive--is underway. This artistic venture, organized by The Art Monkeys, benefits Food for Others, Inc., the largest distributor of free food directly to people in need in Northern Virginia.
Last year's Have a Heart Project, garnered considerable attention from local media and was the subject of a documentary by young filmmaker, Makeda Thomas. The exhibit challenged the community to help Studio 4 artists fill an "empty kitchen" art installation and successfully raised over 750 lbs. of non-perishable food for Food for Others during its month-long run.
This year's installation opened to the public on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Studio 4's exhibit space has been transformed by 1,325 empty lunch bags featuring original art works created by an array of resident and guest artists. Each of the unique lunch bag works of art in the exhibit can be obtained by making a $10 donation, 100% of which will benefit Food for Others. As the artists replace each sold piece of art with food purchased with the donation, the installation will continually evolve throughout the gallery. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 9, from 6 to 9pm, in Studio 4 (Building W-4) of the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA.
"This year's exhibit is a great opportunity for new and seasoned collectors alike to get their hands on original art at an incredibly low price while making a difference." says participating artist and co-organizer MG Stout.
The public can also be a part of this exciting art installation to help Northern Virginians in need by donating canned or non-perishable food items during Studio 4's normal business hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 11 am - 7 pm, and Sunday from noon - 5 pm. Donations will be welcome through the exhibit's run, Wednesday, February 6 - Sunday, March 3, 2013.

Coming Soon: Ritmos/Rhythms
I will be Studio 4's featured artist for the month of September.
My new collection, "Ritmos/Rhythms" will celebrate my Latino heritage, particularly its rich sounds and flavors. There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, September 8th 6-9pm (more details to come in the weeks ahead).
Yesterday I began working on a Latin Jazz inspired piece.

A Gay Ol' Time!
If you missed the opening reception for Studio 4's 4 Equality: A Show of Pride on Saturday June 2nd you missed out on a fabulous evening. Guests were treated to great pride-inspired works of art, music by DJ Spence and food by Freddie's Beach Bar & Restaurant. There was even dancing and a fabulous drag show by Hope B. Childs, Patsee Bottoms and Tiffany B. Childs right in our front gallery. Luckily you will be able to catch a stream of the event soon on QRadio! Stay tuned!

Pride Show Sneak Peeks
In 2 1/2 weeks "4 Equality: A Show of Pride" will open. I am in the middle of a painting frenzy, creating a journal-like installation made up of various paintings. That's all I want to give away for now. Over the next 2 weeks I will post small "sneak peeks" of the components in progress.

Flamingo Painting...continued.
I warn you, this is a long one. LOL
If I seem out of it it's just the toothache that was kicking my ass.
I took the day off to visit the dentist. She prescribed some antibiotics and pain killers.
A root canal is in my near future...yay.
In spite of my toothache, we managed to complete our flamingo painting and we're thrilled with it. You can't really see the glitter in it in this picture. We have special plans for how it will be displayed at Artomatic, but I will save that for another post. ;-)

In & OUT of the Studio
Yesterday started out a bit grey and gloomy but by the afternoon the sun was shining and calling me to paint outdoors. I began working on my "1 in 10" piece for our upcoming 4 Equality: A Show of Pride exhibit (more on that soon, stay tuned!).
This piece is based on the common approximation that 1 in 10 people are gay. I thought it might be interesting if I counted from one to ten over and over again, replacing a random number with a positive word or quality each time. For example: 1, 2, 3, 4, amazing, 6, 7, 8, 10...1, 2, inspiring, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10...and so on. I wanted to do more than write the words on the canvas so I decided to cut silhouette stencils of people from various walks of life. 1 out of every 10 will be pink, a color of great LGBT historic significance.

All in a Sunday's Afternoon
After killing a painting that just wasn't working I felt I could breathe once more and was ready to create some new work. My mind is focused on simple pop imagery at the moment.
I was able to complete "Blondes", a piece I'd begun some months back but had been pushed aside and waited patiently in a corner of my studio.
I also added a few more strokes and paint splatters and a bit of graffiti to small abstracts in progress.

City Birds
Yesterday I completed this mixed media piece.
I wanted to create a painting that spoke of Springtime in a city environment.
I think (hope) I've accomplished this. I call it "City Birds".
I have started working on 2 smaller companion pieces.

Back in the Studio
I returned to my studio yesterday after taking a week off to move (again). While we are thrilled to be back in our old neighborhood (directly across the street from our old house, what are the odds?!), it was nice to escape the sea of moving boxes and get to paint something other than a wall.
My brain is all over the place at the moment so I'm simultaneously working on 3 very different pieces.

Have a Heart Group Project
Mary and I collaborate quite often, but this past week we had the chance to work together as a studio on one of the projects for the Have a Heart exhibit. It was great fun!
