12 Chinas
China Machado is fierceness personified.
For those who might not be familiar with China, here's an excerpt from a wonderful W Magazine article on her:
China's timeless beauty and grace was the inspiration for a recently completed 12-piece commissioned series.

For those who might not be familiar with China, here's an excerpt from a wonderful W Magazine article on her:
At age 19, China Machado ran away with the most famous bullfighter in the world. What followed that impulsive decision was a charmed life of mystique and chic: She modeled for the great couture houses of Paris and then made fashion history as the first non-Caucasian face to grace a major American magazine.

Naughty Bits
Because there's just not enough of me blabbing or posting images throughout the web, I've created yet another blog (quit your groans).
The new blog is called Naughty Bits and I hope many of you will join me there as well.
Naughty Bits Welcome Post:
Dear Readers,
Welcome to "Naughty Bits".
I created this blog to share my new series of Erotic Pop paintings. I have chosen to do so through a separate blog rather than post them on The Gascot Method to give supporters of my Latin Pop work the choice of keeping up with these works or not as I realize that erotic art is not everyone's cup of tea. For those who want to follow both blogs, but might read The Gascot Method from work, you will have the choice to view this series from home rather than have any NSFW imagery interrupt your lunchtime blog-reading. LOL.
Either way, I hope many will follow and enjoy (comments are always welcome). I plan to have a lot of fun with this body of work!

"Piano & Sax" featured on Literacyhead.com
From the Literacyhead website:
What is a Literacyhead?
A Literacyhead is someone who is intensely serious about exercising creative literacy, making connections across multiple literacies, pursuing thoughtful literacy as an individual and as a teacher, and constantly searching for ideas. Literacyheads may have expertise in different areas of literacy, but all are committed to children's literacy, passionate about the arts, incessant thinkers, and display a propensity for having fun.
My work is being used as a teaching tool (to teach the word "practice") in the article Visual Vocabulary .
The original Piano & Sax painting is currently available through Singing Stone Gallery in Tampa, FL.

River's Journey
Earlier this year, while looking for something in the attic, I came across a stack of 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" wooden squares. Seeing potential in them, I immediately brought them down into the studio. Each day, from behind my easel, I see them up on the shelf, patiently waiting to be included in the fun.
A few months ago I decided to paint Mexican tile designs on them, but that idea quickly fizzled away. Last week, while working on a 12-piece Pop Art commission, I reached for one of the squares to help break up the repetitiveness of the project at hand. Here is the result:

Prince Inspiration Week Pt 5
This piece, painted a few years back, was also inspired by the line "Every day is a yellow day. I'm blinded by the daisies in your yard." from Prince's ballad Condition of the Heart.

Prince Inspiration Week Pt. 4
Jazz Trio
acrylic on canvas/11x14"/sold
This painting is available as a print.
I ended up naming this piece Jazz Trio, but it was actually painted while I listened to the song Musicology incessantly.

Joy in Repetition
acrylic on canvas/24x36"/original sold
This painting is available as a print.
The movie Graffiti Bridge might have been a box office flop and little more than a corny-at-best overblown music video, but the soundtrack included some very good songs like The Question of U, the hit Thieves in The Temple and my all time favorite Prince song...Joy in Repetition.

Prince Inspiration Week Pt.1
Music is as much a part of my creative process as are paint and canvas. Walk into my studio during work hours and you will be greeted by a variety of rhythms, vocals and musical styles. R&B, Pop, Electronica, Salsa, Jazz...each inspires me in its own unique manner.
Unless you're new to this blog, you probably know by now that for better or worse...brilliant or just downright out-there and kooky, I am a huge Prince fan.
This week I'll post a few paintings (some new, some not so new) that were inspired by the music of the Great Purple One.
inspired by Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife
acrylic on canvas/18x24"
available
This painting is also available as a print.
Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife, is an amazing ballad from Prince's 1996 triple album Emancipation. The song is one of several in the album which celebrates his then-wife, the beautiful Mayte Garcia, and their union.

Get Well Soon, Gabourey Sidibe
Much attention is being paid to Gabourey Sidibe's Elle cover. There is controversy on whether her skin might have been photoshopped to look lighter or not.
Why is everyone ignoring the fact that there is clearly some sort of wild animal gnawing at her head???
Our thoughts are with you, Gabourey. Get well soon!

DIY Fashion: Runway Looks for Less
I might introduce a new segment to my blog.

We'll call it:

Runway Looks for Less
Our first look will be this lovely ensemble (to impress your friends pronounce: ensemBLAH, strong emphasis on the BLAH!) was plucked from a recent Michael Kors collection (thanks becca!).
You might be looking at this and saying to yourself "I love adding inches and poundage to my hips and thighs, but I'd never be able to afford a skirt like that."
Ok, first of all, quit talking to yourself. It makes your co-workers think you're crazy.
Secondly: YES YOU CAN!
Your fab faux-Kors skirt is waiting for you at your nearest Home Depot!
For a touch of authenticity, I suggest the following footwear:
And don't forget to accessorize!
Stop by Party City on your way home and pick up a bag of these.
Happy Shopping!

Weekend Finds
The table is solid wood and still has a functioning early 60's Singer sewing machine inside it that flips up when you open the top. We paid $10 for it. I've not yet decided whether I will paint the whole piece out a lacquered white or just refinish the top (there's a small spot where the finish worn). I guess it depends where it ends up at our next place.
The mid-century lamp needs to be rewired (easily done) and I repaired a hairline crack in the paper shade (it's at the back on the bottom and not something you'd even see when displayed).
We paid a whopping $6 for it.
