Last Painting of 2016

Well, here it is...the last painting of 2016.

Ouch, acrylic and ink on canvas, 11" x 14"
Original and prints available

This year leaves most of us in need of a little healing. I could think of no better (or hopeful) symbol for that than E. T. the Extraterrestrial's glowing finger. Silly, I know.
Prompted (because "inspired" feels an odd word) by what feels like unprecedented cultural loss in 2016, of generation x youth, specifically, expect a series of Save the 80's Latin Pop paintings and a group show art call in the coming weeks/months.

Random Movie Review: Anabelle

Ok, so it's no secret I hated the snoozefest called "The Conjuring" so I wasn't exactly sure why we were going to see its prequel "Anabelle" tonight.
Oh yes, it's because we can't get our netflix up without wanting to throw some device out the window with the "high speed" (wink wink) internet upgrade we paid for at the hotel. So sure, let's do "Annabelle", why not...
It was pretty great. :-0
Not only does it surpass Conjuring by miles, but I would actually consider it one of the better horror flicks of recent. Simpler than The Conjuring and 5 times as effective. Clean and straight forward storytelling. Very simple and therefore EFFECTIVE makeup/special effects that result in imagery that lingers long after the movie ends. I even appreciated the effort to make the ridiculous appearance of a doll no one in their right mind would actually buy (except at a horror convention) somewhat make sense by including a few samples of the "collection" she's a part of. There's a bit of a "Rosemary's Baby" atmosphere to the film (It is no "Rosemary's Baby" by any stretch of the imagination, mind you.) with the themes tackled, the building they live in and fellow tenant/rare-book shop owner Evelyn (played by my girl Alfre Woodard). I expect there will be another film (I can already see the "Annabelle Trilogy" boxed sets out two Halloweens or so from now) as, in this episode, they revisit the nurses with which Conjuring began. The door is left open for the filmmakers to bring us their stories if they want to. The jolts were genuine. The story was simple (a good thing) but tight. The imagery was good (I REALLY enjoyed two things in particular which I won't spoil by mentioning) and the performances were solid. 3.5 (mayyyybe 4) out of 5.  ‪#‎Whoddathunkit‬

Fierce Friday on a Wednesday: R.I.P. Liz Taylor

I did not grow up watching Elizabeth Taylor films. It was not until high school, when I became active in theater , that I first watched "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" It, of course, left an undying impression on me and remains, to this very day, one of my favorite films ever. Shortly after that, I became to familiarize and fall in love with her impressive body of work.

There has always been a soft spot in my heart for Ms. Taylor. Her great acting and persona aside (not to mention her generous dedication to the fight against HIV/AIDS), she has always reminded me of my mother (or the other way around). Not to say that my mother was a dead ringer for Liz, but she was that "type" of beauty. People often told her so and this comparison endeared me to the movie star.

As a dear friend of mine mentioned earlier today, she was one of the last true movie stars. They simply don't make them like Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor anymore. She perfectly balanced talent, glamor, sex appeal, kindness, compassion and yes, even scandal. She was a gutsy and flawed; as intriguing off as she was on screen. Young Hollywood could take a lesson or two, perhaps an entire course from her.

Today, Ms. Taylor, I do not mourn you.
I celebrate you!
Rest in peace, you beautiful goddess.

Holy Kitty-Cat Batman!!!

Cher 'to Play Catwoman' in Next Batman Film
By Jessica Salter

Cher has been lined up to star in the next Batman movie, it has been claimed.

The 62-year-old singer and actress is reported to be in talks to play Catwoman opposite Christian Bale in the third Batman film from British director Christopher Nolan.

The Oscar-winner will join a cast that includes Johnny Depp as The Riddler as she plays the whip-carrying burglar. The character has also been played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.

A studio executive said: "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.

"The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."

Filming of the new Batman instalment, provisionally entitled The Caped Crusader, is due to begin in Vancouver early next year.

The Dark Knight, this summer's blockbuster, has become the most successful of the Batman movies. Warner Bros expects the film to make about $530m.

It stars the late Heath Ledger, who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment after taking an accidental drugs overdose. His performance as The Joker is widely expected to garner an Oscar nomination.

Cher's recent acting performances have included Tea with Mussolini in 1999 and Stuck on You, in 2003 in which she played herself.

Meowwwwwwhmmm!

Sure, she sounds a little more Mr. Ed-ish than feline, but she can work on that.

I'm having gay dreams of a Mackie Catwoman outfit.

I might hyperventilate over this one!
